Howard Meyer

Howard Meyer is a playwright and founding Artistic Director of Axial Theatre.

Howard’s most recent play, Senescence, is now a semifinalist at the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference

Maybe Never Fell, received it’s world premiere at Axial Theatre in Fall 2016 and was presented as a staged reading at the Cherry Lane Theatre in January 2017. The play received two Roundtable readings at Lark Play Development Center. The readings featured Mike Crane, Anita Anthonj, Francesco Campari and Tom Ligon and was directed by Lisa Rothe.

Howard’s play, Loss, was commissioned by Half Moon Theatre, resident at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. The play was included in their spring 2016 Ten Minute Play Festival.

The monologue, Horus, was performed by Mackenzie Lansing as part of Axial Theatre’s themed evening, ‘Life on Earth,’ May 2014.

Paint Made Flesh,  received its first full read at The Lark Play Development Center on April 8th, 2014 with Meredith Autry, Rasha Zamamiri, and Mike Crane reading. Jenn Haltman directed. It was invited to the 2015 Last Frontier Theatre Conference and was a 2015 semi finalist at the O’Neill.

Radiance was produced to critical praise at Axial in Spring, 2013. The production was directed by Christopher Grabowski and featured Obie Award Winning actor Chris McCann. The play was a two time semi-finalist (2011, 2012) at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and a finalist (2012) for the Hormel New Works Festival at the Phoenix Theatre.

25th Frame/Wandering Monk Productions re-optioned Howard’s play Lost In Paradise for a motion picture. Screenwriter Carson Becker was also engaged.

WELCOME, This is a Neighborhood Watch Community was read at The Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, The Barrow Group,  Naked Angels’ Tuesdays at 9 (2008-2009), and Pacific Resident Theatre (2012) and was presented at Axial Theatre in November, 2010 directed by Drama Desk award-winner, Josh Hecht. The production featured LABrynth Theater Company co-founder, David Deblinger, and Emmy-nominated actor, Jon Lindstrom.

Howard’s other plays include The Kiss, All That’s Fair, The Contract, (co-created with playwright Linda Giuliano, and the Axial company) Twenty, Lost in Paradise, AngelBeast, Cherrie & Jerry and the monologue, Calculus. Productions of AngelBeast and Cherrie & Jerry at Axial Theatre have both received critical acclaim (Gannet).

Howard’s directorial assignments include the NYC premiere of Athol Fugard’s original text of Hello and Goodbye (New York Theatre Workshop, Rattlestick Playwright’s Theatre, co-produced by Kevin Spacey), the original workshop of Craig Wright’s The Pavilion (Playwright Center), Adam Rapp’s Train Story, Linda Giuliano’s The Last Delivery, The Seagull, Doll’s House and his own Cherrie & Jerry and Lost in Paradise (Axial Theatre). He is an inaugural member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director’s Lab.

In 1998 Howard co-founded Axial Theatre, now in its 18th season developing and presenting new plays in Westchester County, NY. Under his artistic direction, Axial has produced over 60 premieres of one-act and full length plays since the theatre’s inaugural performance in the winter of 2000.
